The River Oaks Volunteer Fire Department was organized in October of 1946. The equipment at that time was what each person could bring for himself. The current department consists of a Day Company, a Night Company and a Training Company. The membership is comprised of a Chief, an Assistant Chief, three Captains, four Lieutenants and forty-four Privates. The department covers an area of four square miles with a population of approximately 9,000. The department trains each week on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings. Business meetings are conducted quarterly on Sunday. The department is very involved in our community. We train our citizens on various safety issues throughout the year. We are also involved with school carnivals, parades, car shows, MDA, food drives and other civic events that occur throughout the year.
